AIBE 20 (XX) Eligibility Criteria 2025 – Candidates planning to appear in the AIBE 2025 exam are urged to refer to the AIBE (XX) 2025 eligibility criteria. Only after ascertaining their eligibility the candidate must fill out the AIBE 2025 application form.

While the eligibility criteria for the AIBE exam is pretty basic, there is always room for surprise. For instance, until recently the candidate was required to get enrolled with a state bar council to appear in the All India Bar Examination. 

However, that criteria has now been changed. As per the updated AIBE (20) XX eligibility criteria, candidates can appear in the AIBE 2025 exam irrespective of whether they are enrolled with the state bar council or not. Also, there is no limit on the number of attempts or age for appearing in the AIBE exam.

The AIBE eligibility criteria 2025 are explained in detail below.

Qualifying examCandidates who have passed a three-year or five-year LLB degree are eligible to appear for the AIBE exam. 
Eligibility of Final-Year Law Students (Without Backlogs)Candidates currently in their final semester of a 3-year or 5-year LL.B. degree  are eligible to register for AIBE.
 
These candidates must have no backlogs from previous semesters to qualify.
Qualifying InstituteThe candidate must have obtained the LLB degree from a BCI-approved institute.

Candidates who are studying or have passed out from a university or college that is not recognised by the BCI are not eligible to appear for AIBE.
Minimum marks in qualifying examThe BCI prescribes no minimum marks for appearing in the AIBE exam. 

However, the candidate must secure a minimum percentage or grades in their law degree as prescribed by universities for further education.
Age LimitThere is no upper or lower age limit for appearing in the AIBE exam.

So, if you meet the other eligibility criteria, you may appear in the AIBE 2025 exam irrespective of your age.
State Bar Council Registration/EnrollmentCandidates who have obtained their LL.B. degree but have not enrolled with any State Bar Council, as well as those who had enrolled but have surrendered their enrolment certificates, are also eligible to apply.

AIBE Eligibility Criteria 2025: Exemptions

Candidates qualifying in the AIBE exam are issued the Certificate of Practice (CoP), which is required to practice in a Court of Law. 

But can law graduates practice law without the CoP? 

The answer is yes. There are certain conditions wherein the candidate can practice law without the CoP. 

BCI allows exemption from AIBE (XX) 2025 exam in the following cases:

  • Law graduates who have passed the three-year LLB or five-year LLB degree before 2009-2010 are not required to take the AIBE exam.
  • These candidates can thus practice law in India without the CoP.
  • Those who graduated in 2008 or earlier, and enrolled later (irrespective of year of enrollment), are also exempted from AIBE.

Who must take the AIBE exam?

Candidates who have completed their LLB degree from 2009-10 onwards must compulsorily take the AIBE exam to practice law in India.
