List of IITs in India 2025 – The IITs are a group of premier autonomous public technical universities in India, renowned for excellence in engineering, science, technology, and research. Established with the vision of nurturing world-class engineers and innovators, IITs are recognized globally for their rigorous academic curriculum, state-of-the-art infrastructure, and outstanding faculty.

The IITs are recognized as Institutes of National Importance by the GoI. This special status, granted through the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961, highlights their pivotal role in advancing technical education, research, and innovation in the country.

Currently, there are 23 IITs across India, with IIT Kharagpur being the first to be established in 1951.

The NIRF Rankings 2025 were released on September 4, 2025. As per the rankings, 9 IITs are placed in the top 10 with IIT Madras in the pole position making it the ninth consecutive year the institute has topped the rankings.

Admission to UG programs, primarily B.Tech, is through the JEE Advanced exam. In 2024, the collective B.Tech seat intake across all IITs stood at approximately 16,053. This means that out of the vast pool of students appearing for JEE Advanced, fewer than 1% ultimately secure admission to an IIT.

List of Programs offered at IITs

IITs are famous for their engineering courses, but in recent years they’ve broadened their academic offerings significantly. Today, besides classical BTech programs like Mechanical, Electrical, Computer Science, Civil, and Chemical Engineering, many IITs now offer newer interdisciplinary and non-engineering programmes. For instance, IIT Delhi will start a four-year BTech in Design (starting 2025-26), which mixes engineering methods with creativity via UCEED.

IIT Madras introduced programmes such as Computational Engineering & Mechanics and Instrumentation & Biomedical Engineering to address emerging needs in health tech, digital engineering, and systems thinking.

There are also Bachelor of Science (BS) programmes in fields like Chemistry, Applied Geophysics, Data Science, and others in some IITs.

On the postgraduate side, IITs offer M.Tech, M.Des (Master of Design), MS by Research, MBA, Integrated Master’s Degrees, and PhDs in both engineering and non-engineering areas.
