GATE 2026 registration with regular fee closes; late fee application open

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, the organizing body for the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) 2026, has officially closed the regular registration window on October 6, 2025. Aspiring candidates who missed the deadline can still apply through the late fee option, with submissions accepted until October 9, 2025, via the official GOAPS portal at gate2026.iitg.ac.in.

The GATE 2026 registration process, which commenced on August 28, 2025, saw an extension of the regular fee deadline from the initial September 28 to October 6, providing additional time for applicants amid high demand.

The national-level GATE examination serves as a gateway for postgraduate admissions to IITs, NITs, and other prestigious institutions, as well as recruitment opportunities in Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) like the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL).

Under the regular fee structure, candidates were required to pay INR 2,000 for General/OBC/EWS categories and INR 1000 for SC/ST/PwD/Female candidates for the first paper (additional fees apply for a second paper). Those opting for the late fee window will incur an extra charge: INR 2,500 for General/OBC/EWS and INR 1,500 for reserved categories per paper. This adjustment aims to accommodate last-minute applicants without penalizing early registrants excessively.

IIT Guwahati has insisted that all applications submit their applications online through the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS).

Documents that the candidate has to submit during the registration process include a valid photo ID, recent passport-sized photograph, signature, and category certificate (if applicable). The candidate is advised to double-check their eligibility criteria – typically undergraduate degree holders or those in their final year of qualifying programs in engineering, technology, science, architecture, or humanities.

The GATE 2026 exam is scheduled for February 7, 8, 14, and 15, 2026, and will be conducted as a computer-based test across 30 papers, including a new sectional paper on Energy Science within Engineering Sciences (XE).

The CAT 2026 admit cards will be released around early January 2026, with results anticipated by March 2026. GATE 2026 scores will be valid for three years.
