BITS Pilani will release the cut-offs during BITSAT 2025 counseling.

Typically, they are released soon after completion of the seat-allotment process. So, the candidate can in the meantime consult previous years’ cut-off data to check what is a good score to have a good chance of admission to their chosen campus.

What is the significance of BITSAT Cut-off?

The BITSAT cutoff 2025 is one of the most eagerly awaited events for prospective applicants.

Here is why:

  1. The cut-off will indicate the degree of competition and difficulty in getting admission to BITS campuses.
  2. If the cut-off is very high, then candidates will have to score heavily to have any chance of admission.
  3. Academic programs like B.E. Mathematics and Computing tend to have the stiffest cut-offs owing to high demand.
  4. B.E. Civil may have comparatively lower cut-offs.
  5. The candidate can use the cut-off as yardstick and plan their exam preparation accordingly.
  6. Without a cut-off, the candidate will not be able to gauge how competitive the exam is. So, in a way the BITSAT cut-off can be a reality check!
  7. If you are preparing for the BITSAT exam, do consult the BITSAT 2025 exam pattern and refer to the official BITSAT 2025 exam syllabus.

Coaching vs Self-study

Coaching vs Self-study – Which is better?: Are you confused whether to take up coaching or not?

It is normal to get confused because nobody wants to leave anything to chance and therefore wants to avail the best available resources to perform well in an entrance exam.

In fact, in the age and time we live in, for good or for worse, entrance exam coaching has become a part and parcel of the preparation ritual. Even the very bright students aren’t at many times brave enough to stake their future on self-study.

So, we thought it is a good time to discuss the pros and cons of self-study and coaching.

What differentiates the two approaches to entrance exam preparation? Is it possible to prepare for entrance exams without coaching? We discuss all these and much more here. So, keep reading.

Coaching vs Self-study – Which is better and why?

The key differences between self-study and coaching is given below.

ParticularCoaching Self-Study
Structure and format of educationCoaching is a very streamlined form of academic discourse.

Also, you are taught in a very structured environment, wherein students need to fit in to get maximum benefit.

For instance, coaching institutes will complete the schedule as per a schedule. So, if you miss some classes, you face the risk of falling behind.
There is no definite structure to self study.

In fact, the structure and format will depend on the study plan you make and how dedicatedly you follow that plan.

Also, you can make multiple changes to the study plan.

In this regard, the coaching classes are more rigid as there structure and format doesn’t change as per the whims and fancies of the student.
Personal assistanceStudents take up coaching in the home of personal assistance by the coaching staff.

But the catch here is that coaching institutes today have hundreds of students in each batch.

So, getting personal attention can be a far fetch dream, unless you are a very good student and the coaching institute feels like investing in you could be gainful (for instance, they may feel like you are a good bet to get a rank in the entrance exam, which if tt happens, can be good promotion for the institute.)
Self-study, as the term indicates, is dependent to a large extent on what the candidates do and decisions they take.

The candidate may be influenced by peer groups, family members, but otherwise, he or she is free to make their own decisions regarding what to study and what to study.
Study material providedThe coaching institutes have their own custom-made study material that students must follow for exam preparation. The candidate is free to choose any study material they find suitable.

It is recommended that the candidate opts for best study material recommended for each subject by experts.
Getting external helpCandidates who undertake coaching more or less depend on coaching manuals.

Also, when the candidate is already taking coaching, one is not expected to again seek help somewhere else.

That being said, if the coaching is inadequate, the candidate may seek help from their teachers, experts.
The candidate while doing self-study is free to get as much external help as possible, from teachers, peers, or even experts, if it is available for free.

The quality of help one can avail will depend on the available resources and also the judgement of the candidate.

The candidate must be smart enough to filter out the good advice from the bad.
Time available for self-studyIf you are doing coaching, you will have very limited time available for self-study.

Typically, coaching classes will take up 2-3 hours every day. Add to add another 1-2 hours of travel time.

So, you must smartly utilize your time for revision of coaching manuals.
Further, you must also find some time to read the textbooks.

This is because if you become over reliant on the notes provided by the coaching institutes, you might lose the habit of reading textbooks or miss out on nuggets of wisdom that they may contain.
Since you are already doing self-study, you have no scarcity of time at your disposal.

So, you can tweak and adjust your exam preparation routine multiple times.
Which to opt for?If you have covered most of the fundamental concepts, coaching can be an option.

But that being said you need to do some research about the institute, the faculty they have.

Also, realize that just taking up coaching won’t matter unless you also complete the study material they share, solve sample papers, and do timely revision.

You must assess your progress keenly after, say, month.

If you feel like coaching is not helping you much, you can opt out and focus on self-study.
If you are a strong kid with strong belief in your abilities to self-learn, then self-study can be fruitful.

Truth be told, there is enough good study material around and if you could complete these texts (as per the syllabus for your exam, you will put yourself in the right track.

After completing a few topics, solve relevant problems, including those given in the sample papers and previous years’ question papers.

Also, since most entrance exams are time-controlled, you need to focus on improving speed and accuracy.

What do coaching institutes say on coaching for entrance exams?

This is what Allen,  a leading coaching institute, has to say on coaching, why, and how it is useful:

When to take coaching for entrance exam preparation?

While we don’t at all recommend that students take coaching for entrance exam preparation, it is also true that many students will still depend on coaching for exam preparation.

So, here we have stipulated a few thumb rules that candidates may consider before enrolling into a coaching institute:

  • You need some help to improve your problem-solving abilities or conceptual understanding of topics. In this case, a crash course may suffice.
  • However, if there are large gaps in your exam preparation, short-term courses won’t cut it. You need a proper course. But note that long-term coaching courses will also be expensive.
  • You need last minute motivation and a peer group to practice with – In some cases your self-study is going great guns, but you may want to spice up things by taking a crash course and test your progress in a peer group.
  • In some cases the candidate is simply not able to do self-study. In that case, a coaching institute can provide a helping hand.
  • Also, if you are a very good candidate, you may also consider taking up coaching considering coaching institutes tend to pay special attention to brilliant students.

How to Prepare for Entrance Exams Without Coaching – Tips, Tricks, and Easy Guide

0

How to prepare for entrance exams without coaching – You can prepare for an entrance through self-study or by taking up coaching.

The second one is the most-popular option among candidates.

But that doesn’t mean you can’t go alone and crack entrance exams like JEE Main, JEE Advanced, NEET, NIFT, or CAT. In fact, you can outperform most candidates from the coaching institutes if you know how to prepare for these exams.

To prepare for an entrance exam without coaching, you need focus, determination, and the right tools (study material, sample papers, mock tests).

Also, entrance exam coaching is not always suitable.

In this article we discuss how you can perform well in any entrance exam with self-study without relying on coaching.

How to prepare for entrance exams without coaching – Tips

Here are some easy but useful tips that candidates can follow to prepare for the entrance exam on their own:

Consult the exam syllabus and pattern

The first thing you need to do before you start preparing for the exam is refer to the updated exam pattern and syllabus.

The syllabus will tell you what topics to prepare while the pattern will tell how to prepare

Syllabus of Top ExamsExam Pattern of Top Exams
JEE Main Syllabus 2025JEE Main Exam Pattern 2025
NEET Exam Pattern 2025
CAT Exam Syllabus 2025CAT Exam Pattern 2025
NIFT Syllabus 2025NIFT Exam Pattern 2025

When to start preparation for the exam?

One avoidable mistake many students make is to start their exam preparation late.

The problem is once you arrive late for dinner, the size of the buffet (syllabus) will scare you. So, you may end up taking a crash course thinking it will solve the underlying problem.

But realize that crash courses aren’t meant to teach you the fundamentals, and even if they do, it will be very superficial in nature. So, you stand to gain nothing but instead end up wasting precious time attending these crash courses. Because the advanced and rapid teaching method of these courses can leave you depressed.

Go for crash courses only if you are done with your preparation and want to do some advanced practice.

Meanwhile, it is recommended that you START your entrance exam preparation at least a year in advance.

Solve Sample Papers

You can buy mock papers on the market for all the popular entrance exams or buy them from e-commerce portals like Amazon, Flipkart, etc. Many online counseling and coaching institutes also offer sample papers online. You can take them.

By solving sample papers for exams like JEE Main, NIFT, CAT, NEET, etc., you will get to understand the question paper pattern, types of questions asked, difficulty level, emerging trends, etc.

The exercise will also help you improve time-management and problem-solving skills.

Take notes during study

Do Timely Revision

Once you complete a topic or chapter, make sure that you keep revisiting the time on regular periods so that you can retain what you have read. Note that if the gap between consecutive revisions is too large, you may have difficulty recalling the topic you have completed.

So, space out the revisions in such a way that the content stays fresh the next time you visit them. Proper revision will help you internalize the topic and underlying concepts.

Take Mock Tests

You must take mock tests typically at the fag end of your exam preparation, say around two weeks before the exam date.

Mocks are intended to help you get acclimatized to the exam mode, pattern, and also the exam timings. For example, if you take the mock tests at the same time as the exam timings, then you can align your body clock accordingly. This may help you stay relaxed and perform to the optimum level of exam day.

Use online resources for exam preparation

YouTube is probably one of the best free resources to prepare for all the top entrance exams today.

If you are confused about a topic or concept, just check it out on YouTube. More likely than not, you can find it there explained by experts in detail.

Here are some guidelines to decide whether the content available on YouTube is accurate, correct, and of good quality:

  • The account has a good number of subscribers
  • The comment section of the content is open (if the comment section is switched off, it can be an indication that people have posted negative comments regarding the uploaded content. So, they have switched off the comment section)
  • If the comment section is open, glance through the comments quickly. If you get good and organic comments, it can be an indication the content can be relied upon.
  • Also, once you go through the content, you can check for yourself if the content is up to the mark, correct, and whether it manages to explain the points you are looking for.

Entrance Exam Coaching – The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

0

If you plan to appear for entrance exams like JEE Main, NEET, CAT, and NIFT, or any entrance exam worth its salt, there is a chance that you may be tempted to take up coaching.

This is often driven by peer pressure and also previous years’ topper results. After all there is no denying the fact that many toppers emerge from the coaching institutes.

But while coaching institutes can help students in some respects, is self study completely useless? Can’t a student by dint of their labour and mental aptitude crack these exams, or even top them? And what exactly is the difference between coaching and self-study?

The sad reality is, today, many students, even the meritorious ones, don’t believe in their abilities to crack these exams on their own. So, they end up taking coaching.

Latest Updates:

How good are the coaching institutes

Coaching institutes come in all hues. Some coaching institutes have a better record than others, but can also be expensive. Also, each centre may have different standards, even if they are from the same institute.

For instance, the teaching faculty will vary across centers. And some of these faculty members can be good while others may not be equally good. So, when choosing a coaching institute, you also need to be particular about the center

Institutes like Aakash, Allen, FIITJEE, Career Point, Topper Academy, Resonance, Super 30, Bansal Classes, Vidyamandir, etc., rank among the best coaching institutes in the country.

These institutes have become such huge brands that they exert tremendous influence on the student community and the academic ecosystem of the country as a whole. Their influence can be felt the most when results of top entrance exams are declared – JEE Main, JEE Advanced, NEET, CAT, etc.

The toppers, many from these institutes, can be found giving interviews to media channels and speaking in glowing terms how a coaching institute helped them crack the entrance exam. The coaching institutes in turn use these bites for further promotion of their brand.

This is how the coaching institutes thrive!

Why can’t our educational institutes create toppers?

The so-called pillars of our education system – schools and colleges – are the places where the toppers should have originally emerged.

But as we all know most of our schools and colleges have turned into job-generation sectors, employing scores of teachers and administrations. The express purpose of public schools and colleges today seems to be creating lucrative jobs for people.

Sadly, a lot of these people who get the jobs are only interested in clinging on to these jobs with little output in return. So, we see a lot of pot-bellied, unfit people managing the business of running a school.

The government is also doing precious little to improve the standard of schools and colleges. While the top ranked colleges and schools are doing a bit better, even students from these institutes can’t seem to manage without coaching.

The state of affairs in the country is so bad that CBSE recently had to come out with an advisory against dummy schools!

The dummy schools concept has cropped up because these students no longer want to attend a regular school. If you ask why, the answer is most schools are ill equipped to prepare students for entrance exams. So, these students who are preparing for entrance exams get admission to a dummy school, where they don’t have to attend school at all. This allows them to focus entirely on exam preparation.

What is the government doing to improve the condition of schools and colleges?

Nothing of substance!

While our PM is doing pariksha pe charcha and taking other initiatives, concrete measures are missing.

Still many parents think twice about admitting their wards to government schools and colleges, despite the fact that educators in these institutes get far better salary and facilities than private institutes.

Where is the accountability?

Accountability that these educators have towards the students and parents. It is where the government could have laid down a few guidelines.

We are not talking about drastic measures, but at least START with some baby steps. To bring accountability.

The icing on the cake is the Delhi government typing up with Physics Wallah (PW) to provide free coaching to Class 12 students preparing for NEET and CUET. The initiative will surely benefit the students.

But is it the correct solution? Why did the Delhi government fall at the mercy of a private institute like Physics Wallah. What happened to the scores of government teachers and academicians retained on Delhi government salary?

Aren’t they good enough? If they are not good enough, what is the reason?

Also, if they aren’t good enough, why are they retained on government salary?

Sadly, nobody is asking these questions.

Short-time solutions will make things worse

Measures like tie-ups with private institutes like Physics Wallah show that there are serious shortcomings in the education system.

Also, these short-term measures can only make matters worse.

For one, it will ensure there is no improvement in the status quo. Second, the measure will encourage more institutes like Physics Wallah while sidelining government colleges and schools.

But with the sanction of state governments, private organizations like Physics Walla will get even more powerful.
