Top Private Universities in Assam

Top Private Universities in Assam – Private universities in Assam have grown rapidly over the past two decades, emerging as important contributors to the state’s higher education sector. They provide alternatives to public institutions by offering modern facilities, diverse courses, and a stronger focus on skill-based and industry-oriented training. Their expansion has helped meet the increasing demand for higher education and reduced the need for students to migrate outside the state.

Today, there are a number of top private universities in Assam. Don Bosco University, is the first private university in Assam, noted for its research orientation and global collaborations. Royal Global University (RGU) in Guwahati has become a leading institution, offering more than 130 programs in fields such as law, business, design, and health sciences. Kaziranga University specializes in engineering, management, and social sciences, while Assam Down Town University is well known for applied sciences, pharmacy, and paramedical education. Recently established universities like Girijananda Chowdhury University and Auniati University add further diversity to Assam’s private education landscape.

However, there is also some skepticism directed at some of these private universities. It is because many lack the academic depth and experienced faculty. Some are accused of prioritizing profit over quality, with high fees and limited recognition of degrees. Affordability remains a major barrier for rural and economically weaker students.

Here we take a look at some of the top private universities in Assam, how to get admission, and much more . So, keep reading.

Top Private Universities in Assam – NIRF Rankings 2025

The NIRF Ranking 2025 is now out.

The University category included the list of the top 100 universities in the country. However, none of the private universities in Assam managed to secure a rank in the list.

This shows that there is still some way to go before the private universities of Assam can really be regarded as truly good universities.

Also, with none of the private universities in Assam making it to the list of top universities published by the NIRF, it leaves doubts in the minds of students as to how to gauge the quality of these institutes.

For instance, there is no directly available data to compare a Don Bosco University with a Royal Global University, or Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya with Don Bosco University.

Consequently, in the absence of clear data, the student must make a judgement purely based on gut instincts and peer feedback.

Higher Education Landscape of Northeast India

The higher education landscape in Northeast India has undergone significant transformation in recent decades, reflecting both challenges and opportunities unique to the region. Comprising eight states – Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura – the region is home to a diverse mix of public and private institutions, including central universities, state universities, deemed universities, and specialized institutes. Assam, being the educational hub, hosts prestigious institutions like Gauhati University, Assam University, and the IIT Guwahati, while other states have gained prominence with institutions such as North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Meghalaya and NITs across the region.

The expansion of higher education has been supported by central initiatives like the North Eastern Region Vision 2020 and programs of the University Grants Commission (UGC). Professional and technical education is also growing, with medical, agricultural, and management institutes emerging.

However, challenges persist: inadequate infrastructure, faculty shortages, limited research output, and accessibility issues due to geography and socio-political factors.

Despite this, the region has immense potential, enriched by its cultural diversity, strategic location, and growing aspirations of youth. Strengthening connectivity, research collaboration, and skill-based education will be key to unlocking Northeast India’s role as an emerging knowledge hub.

Why follow the best books for NID DAT 2026 Exam Preparation?

Here we give you ten reasons why you must invest in good study material to prepare for the NID DAT 2026 exam. Read on.

  1. Follow the NID DAT 2026 Exam Pattern and Syllabus – Recommended books like “NID DAT Preparation Guide” by R. S. Aggarwal or “NID Entrance Exam Guide” by Surendra Kavimandan are suited to the NID DAT exam pattern and syllabus.

Consequently, these books can help you understand what to expect in both Part A (aptitude test) and Part B (design and drawing test).

  1. Build Design Concepts – Books like “The Design of Everyday Things” by Don Norman or “Design Basics” by David A. Lauer introduce you to fundamental design principles, such as balance, proportion, color theory, and user-centered design.

These concepts are crucial for solving design-related problems that are asked in the NID DAT exam.

  1. Improve Drawing and Sketching Skills – The NID Design Aptitude Test will evaluate your ability to sketch and visualize ideas. Books like “Drawing for Designers” by Alan Pipes or “You Can Draw in 30 Days” by Mark Kistler will help you develop your drawing skills, perspective, shading, and rendering techniques.

Make sure that you practice regularly using these resources so that you can quickly and effectively express your ideas on paper during the exam.

  1. Harness Creativity and Innovation – Books like “Creative Confidence” by Tom Kelley and David Kelley will inspire and help you to think outside the box and develop innovative solutions, which is a key aspect of the NID DAT.

These books are designed to help you approach problems with a fresh perspective and a fresh pair of eyes.

  1. Practice with Solved Papers and Mock Tests – The candidate must solve NID DAT sample papers to improve their time-management and problem-solving skills. When solving sample papers, make sure that you are solving different types of questions, and not repeating the same question type over and over again. Also, you can start solving sample papers very early on in your NID DAT exam preparation; for instance, after completing a chapter, solve the related questions given in the NID sample papers. Mock tests, meanwhile, are suited closer to the exam to give final touches to one’s exam preparation.
  1. Develop Observational and Analytical Skills – The NID DAT tests your ability to observe, analyze, and interpret scenarios. So, you need to sharpen these skills. Quantitative Aptitude” by R. S. Aggarwal is one of the best books for this purpose. Additionally, the book will also help you prepare for the logical and analytical questions in Part A of the exam.
  1. Stay Updated about Design Trends – Reading design-related books will ensure you are updated about the current trends, famous designers, etc. Also, read up a bit on design history. These details can be useful for both the written test and the interview/portfolio round. For example, “The Design of Everyday Things” provides insights into how design impacts daily life, a topic often explored in the exam.
  1. Stay confident and relaxed – Being well-prepared with the right resources will help you build your confidence while keeping exam-related stress at bay. It is recommended that you stay in the present rather than day-dreaming and waking up to unbearable stress the next!
  1. Master time management – Remember, all your effort will go up in flames if you are not able to complete the paper or have to miss out on easy questions because you have run out of time. The NID DAT is a lengthy exam, and you need to prepare for that. Use books with practice questions and mock tests to learn how to allocate time effectively between sections.
  1. Prepare for the Portfolio Round – The books mentioned above are primarily focused on the written exam, but will also indirectly help you build a strong portfolio by improving your design thinking, sketching, and presentation skills. Remember – A good portfolio is essential for the second stage (DAT Mains) of the NID admission process.

Coaching vs Self-study

0

Coaching vs Self-study – Which is better?: Are you confused whether to take up coaching or not?

It is normal to get confused because nobody wants to leave anything to chance and therefore wants to avail the best available resources to perform well in an entrance exam, be it CAT 2026, JEE Main exam, or NIFT 2026.

In fact, in the age and time we live in, for good or for worse, entrance exam coaching has become a part and parcel of the preparation ritual. Even the very bright students aren’t at many times brave enough to stake their future just relying on self-study.

So, a discussion on the pros and cons of self-study and coaching is inevitable.

What differentiates the two approaches to entrance exam preparation? Is it possible to prepare for entrance exams without coaching? We discuss all these and much more here. So, keep reading.

Coaching vs Self-study – Which is better and why?

The key differences between self-study and coaching is given below.

ParticularCoaching Self-Study
Structure and format of educationCoaching is a very streamlined form of academic discourse.

Also, you are taught in a very structured environment, wherein students need to fit in to get maximum benefit.

For instance, coaching institutes will complete the schedule as per a schedule. So, if you miss some classes, you face the risk of falling behind.
There is no definite structure to self study.

In fact, the structure and format will depend on the study plan you make and how dedicatedly you follow that plan.

Also, you can make multiple changes to the study plan.

In this regard, the coaching classes are more rigid as there structure and format doesn’t change as per the whims and fancies of the student.
Personal assistanceStudents take up coaching in the home of personal assistance by the coaching staff.

But the catch here is that coaching institutes today have hundreds of students in each batch.

So, getting personal attention can be a far fetch dream, unless you are a very good student and the coaching institute feels like investing in you could be gainful (for instance, they may feel like you are a good bet to get a rank in the entrance exam, which if tt happens, can be good promotion for the institute.)
Self-study, as the term indicates, is dependent to a large extent on what the candidates do and decisions they take.

The candidate may be influenced by peer groups, family members, but otherwise, he or she is free to make their own decisions regarding what to study and what to study.
Study material providedThe coaching institutes have their own custom-made study material that students must follow for exam preparation. The candidate is free to choose any study material they find suitable.

It is recommended that the candidate opts for best study material recommended for each subject by experts.
Getting external helpCandidates who undertake coaching more or less depend on coaching manuals.

Also, when the candidate is already taking coaching, one is not expected to again seek help somewhere else.

That being said, if the coaching is inadequate, the candidate may seek help from their teachers, experts.
The candidate while doing self-study is free to get as much external help as possible, from teachers, peers, or even experts, if it is available for free.

The quality of help one can avail will depend on the available resources and also the judgement of the candidate.

The candidate must be smart enough to filter out the good advice from the bad.
Time available for self-studyIf you are doing coaching, you will have very limited time available for self-study.

Typically, coaching classes will take up 2-3 hours every day. Add to add another 1-2 hours of travel time.

So, you must smartly utilize your time for revision of coaching manuals.
Further, you must also find some time to read the textbooks.

This is because if you become over reliant on the notes provided by the coaching institutes, you might lose the habit of reading textbooks or miss out on nuggets of wisdom that they may contain.
Since you are already doing self-study, you have no scarcity of time at your disposal.

So, you can tweak and adjust your exam preparation routine multiple times.
Which to opt for?If you have covered most of the fundamental concepts, coaching can be an option.

But that being said you need to do some research about the institute, the faculty they have.

Also, realize that just taking up coaching won’t matter unless you also complete the study material they share, solve sample papers, and do timely revision.

You must assess your progress keenly after, say, month.

If you feel like coaching is not helping you much, you can opt out and focus on self-study.
If you are a strong kid with strong belief in your abilities to self-learn, then self-study can be fruitful.

Truth be told, there is enough good study material around and if you could complete these texts (as per the syllabus for your exam, you will put yourself in the right track.

After completing a few topics, solve relevant problems, including those given in the sample papers and previous years’ question papers.

Also, since most entrance exams are time-controlled, you need to focus on improving speed and accuracy.

What do coaching institutes say on coaching for entrance exams?

This is what Allen,  a leading coaching institute, has to say on coaching, why, and how it is useful:

Allen on coaching for entrance exams

When to take coaching for entrance exam preparation?

While we don’t at all recommend that students take coaching for entrance exam preparation, it is also true that many students will still depend on coaching for exam preparation.

So, here we have stipulated a few thumb rules that candidates may consider before enrolling into a coaching institute:

  • You need some help to improve your problem-solving abilities or conceptual understanding of topics. In this case, a crash course may suffice.
  • However, if there are large gaps in your exam preparation, short-term courses won’t cut it. You need a proper course. But note that long-term coaching courses will also be expensive.
  • You need last minute motivation and a peer group to practice with – In some cases your self-study is going great guns, but you may want to spice up things by taking a crash course and test your progress in a peer group.
  • In some cases the candidate is simply not able to do self-study. In that case, a coaching institute can provide a helping hand.
  • Also, if you are a very good candidate, you may also consider taking up coaching considering coaching institutes tend to pay special attention to brilliant students.

Disadvantages of coaching

Here are a few disadvantages associated with coaching:

  • Most coaching institutes can have 30-40 students per batch, which means there is very little room for personalized attention. If you are a mediocre student and need some special attention, you will need to self-approach the faculty try to get help. If you are a shy guy or if the faculty is unresponsive, you will keep lagging behind.
  • Another thing is if you lagging behind, you will also have very little time for self-study with all the travelling and time spent at the coaching center.
  • Success rate of coaching institutes – Just take a closer look at how many students enrolled at the coaching institutes actually achieve success. If there are only a handful, then it may mean that these students got preferential attention, are already meritorious students, or these students may have put a praiseworthy effort.
  • You may lose the habit of reading textbooks – Coaching institutes have their own study material, meaning most candidates will not even open any textbooks or know what exactly is inside them. Now this is not a very healthy practice. Being fed ready made stuff by the coaching institutes may compromise the self-learning ability of the candidate. In other words, the candidate will expect to be spoon fed every time, and if there comes a time when things may not go right, they may lose faith.

NIRF Ranking 2025 – Notification Released

The Ministry of Education has notified that the NIRF 2025 rankings will be made public on September 4, 2025. The notification is released online at nirfindia.org.

This is what the notification says regarding the release of NIRF Rankings 2025.

NIRF 2025 Ranking Release Notification

What’s NEW in the NIRF Rankings 2025?

The NIRF 2025 rankings should be out in September 2025. Here are a few changes that might be made to the NIRF Rankings this year.

  1. The rankings may exclude the Medical category. According to news published by portals like shiksha.com, the rankings could be excluded due to persistent discrepancies in data submitted by participating institutes. If that happens, it could land a body blow to the NIRF Rankings and its credibility.
  2. Introduction of negative marking – In a welcome change, negative marking has been introduced for withdrawing research publications. The penalty for the time being has been kept low, with provisions to increase it if needed. The negative marking will presumably discourage institutions from publishing research papers just to get extra marks in the ranking parameters, only to withdraw the papers once the ranking process is over. Such types of activities by institutions do a disservice to the education sector.
